Photographer in a Rut: Imposter Syndrome & Moving Forward

It’s been a while since I’ve sat down to write anything about my photography journey. Life has been hectic — my full‑time job, family commitments, and everything in between — and naturally, photography has had to take a back seat. When that happens, the doubts creep in.

I catch myself wondering: Should I just go back to treating this as a hobby? Should I pack it in? Am I really good enough? All the usual negative thoughts.

But then, out of nowhere, something reminds me exactly why I picked up a camera in the first place. A moment, a message, a photo I’m proud of — and suddenly the passion comes rushing back. Those doubts are normal. They’re part of being human. They push us, shape us, and make us appreciate the small wins. They show us how far we’ve come and how much further we can go.

I’ve learned that imposter syndrome is simply a part of me. It’s held me back at times, but it’s also taught me to pause and look at what I have achieved. And honestly… I’ve done alright.

Am I perfect? Absolutely not. (Although I do tell my partner I am — she disagrees, obviously.) But that’s the point. Imperfection is what makes us who we are.

Despite the doubts, I’m still moving forward. And recently, a new and genuinely exciting opportunity has come up — something that could take RMvisuals to the next level. Of course, the familiar wave of nerves hit me instantly, but so did the excitement. Opportunities like this don’t come around often.

So, watch this space.

And remember: keep going. Take the small leaps. Feel the joy in the progress you make, no matter how tiny it seems.
